Are you sure you remembered the question correctly?
I see where Dudette got 107 from, that would be if the 50% and 20% were playing ONLY those sports, and the 24 were on top of that, then it would be 107...(and a bit!)

I worked out an answer and then checked it against theirs but I've forgotten exactly what it is

UPDATE: From the Mensa website:
The 2005 Mensa Page-A-Day Calendar puzzle for Monday, March 28, is missing an all-important word. We regret the error.
The question should read, "Our local high school is fairly sports-minded. Half
the students play soccer, 20 percent play basketball. There are 99 taking no
sports, 24 taking both. What is the total enrollment of the school?"

and the result is as follows
School = 50% + 20% + 99 - 24
School = 70% + 75
therefore 30% = 75, simplified as 10% = 25
so the school has = 250 students.
