Ostriches lower their heads to the ground when they sense danger, but they don't actuall bury or cover their heads in sand. Some ostriches lie on the ground with their neck outstretched to escape an enemy. The male uses his bill to dig nests and move eggs around, which is often mistaken for the curious behaviour of burying his head.
