There is some debate, but most rock and roll historians agree that Bill Hayley's "Crazy, man, crazy" in 1953 was the first rock and roll tune to crack the Billboard charts. For his next release, Bill cleaned up the raunchy lyrics to to Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll", which emphasized what Hayley called the "rocak and roll beat". Legend has it that disc jockey Alan Freed coined the phrase "rock and roll" while listening to Bill Hayley's "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie".
