Culture Club debuted with "White Boy" and "I'm Afraid" on the Virgin label. While the songs garned some play in London's dance clubs, neither made the charts. The band's run at the charts started with their third release, "Do You REally Want to Hurt Me" (#2 1/15/83 Billboard). Their first Top 10 was a critical success as well as a financial one. The New Musical Express raved about the single, adding that the band was very talented, as well as being trendy and accessible. The band scored several hits in the next twelve months before falling apart, in part due to Boy George's well-publcized problems with heroin.
