On July 5, 1954, Elvis recorded "That's Alright" at Sun Studios (706 Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee). The session was intended as a rehersal to work in the band, and to decide on the "Elvis Presley sound" Bassist Bill Black, guitarist Scotty Moore, and Elvis ran through uninsoired cover versions of popular ballads before hitting on "That's Alright", an old blues song by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. After several takes they hit on a version that excited Sun Studios' owner Sam Phillips. They produced a rhythm record described by Albert Goldman as "a remarkable feat of breathing in one cultural atmosphere and breathing out another". Scotty Moore was less academic in his reaction to the song. He thought they might get run out of town for playing this new rockabilly. Quite the opposite happened: they became local heroes. After the record had been on the market for one week, five thousand orders were placed, and by the end of July it had reached the number 3 spot on the local charts.
