The song's writer David Lee Roth says he was inspired to write the tune after watching a news item about a man who threatened to jump from a skyscraper in New York City. In the newscast he heard someone in the background yelling, "Go ahead and jump!!" at the hapless fellow on the window ledge. When it came time to write the song, that phrase stuck in his head. Van Halen's version of "Jump" spent 5 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts.
