Sorry for taking so long to post this
In 1992 they were awarded millions of dollars in back royalties for the 1956 hit song. They wrote the tune while singing on street corners in their native New York. Later, when lead singer Frankie Lymon joined the group, which came to be known as Frankie Lymon and the teenagers, they recorded the tune, and enjoyed a top 10 hit in 1956. Unfortunately for them, the record business was still in its infancy, and songwriters were often cheated out of their royalties. The copyright for hit songs was quite often registered by record companies or producers, who would get rich, while the artists rarely saw any money from their work. The next 36 years saw them semi-retire from the music business and take odd jobs, like driving cabs. In 1987 they launched a suit against Morris Levy, the record company executive who owned the song. Levy died in 1989, and his estate settled the case (for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to be in the millions of dollars) in 1992.
