They met a church picnic in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton in July 1957 where John's band "The Quarrymen" were playing that day. Between sets Paul who was an aspiring musician taught John between sets to play Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock" and Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-a-Lula".
