The full extent of the scandal of early release for 'lifers' can be revealed for the first time today.

Two weeks after the Home Office admitted 53 prisoners given life sentences since 2000 have already been freed, the Daily Mail has discovered that 12 of them have gone on to commit further crimes.

A 14-year-old schoolgirl was taken to court for common assault for "pinging" the underwiring of a classmate's bra, in a case magistrates said should never have come to court.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of her age, admitted common assault after accepting that what she did was "technically" against the law.

The average UK household is 10 per cent worse off now than it was four years ago as a result of rising mortgage costs and massive hikes in utility bills, figures showed today.

The typical family with two children aged under 16 has seen their level of disposable income fall by an average of £82 a month since 2002/2003, according to accountants Ernst & Young
