I am collecting teacups, and a friend gave me this little devotional book with a pretty picture of a teacup and roses on the cover.

I would like to take some time over the next few weeks to posts some of the encouragement it gave me.

It is from the book : Fill My Cup Lord by Emilie Barnes.


Fill my cup, Lord.... I offer you my cup of stress that you may fill it with quietness.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2

Quiet time.
It's a lovely phrase, isn't it? To me, "quiet time" summons up images of stillness and serenity, of a quiet communion with God on a beautiful garden patio or a cozy window seat - reading his Word and praying and journaling while a fragrant cup of tea steams at my elbow.
And I have wonderful quiet times like that.
But these days, I have to confess, my quiet times are not always so quiet - at least not at first. Sometimes they start out more like silent wrestling matches as I strugle with my fears, my worries, my pain.

Do you have times like that? Times when you seek out solitued, flee into stillness, only to find that your worries have followed and refuse to leave you alone? Or times when your schedule is so demanding that quiet time with God feels like just one more chore you can't manage?

If so, I have good news for you.

A quiet spirit is not a requirement for a quiet time with the Lord.

Yes, I need to be willing to come to him, to offer him my cup filled with whatever is troubling me. But if I do that, I have found that he can supply the quiet spirit. If I can mange to hand over that cup of trouble, he can and will fill iit to overflowing with serenity and peace.

What a wonderful thing to know, to remember, to remind yourself of when you feel overwhelmed with busyness or with pain. You don't have to come to him quiet. You just need to come to him.

The last few years hae not been easy ones for our family. Not only has our schedule been packed with important but wearying obligations, but the trauma of an impending divorce has also torn a big rip in the fabric of our lives. I've had to watch as people I love make decisions I don't understand or approve of, and I've agonized as other Ilove suffer hurts I can't soothe. I've had to wait for answers and understanding and resolution that just haven't come yet.

That's why so many of my quiet times lately have started out anything but quiet. Often I have been angry or torn or worried or scared.

But that's why I need the quiet in the the first place. When my mind is full of clamor and my cup is full of trouble, that's when I most need to hear God's still small voice, and to feel his peace.

This is what I'm learning once again as I hold up my cup to the Lord and seek to spend time with him:

My quiet time is not a gift I give to God.
My quiet time is a gift God gives to me.

I come with my cup of confusion and worry. He's the one who takes that cup and empties it and then pours it full of quietness and peace.

He supplies the quiet. I supply the time.

I have been following the story of Anders Frisk, the Swedish FIFA Referee who has decided to quit refereeing altogether due to threats he has received against him and his family by "Chelsea supporters" and blames the Chelsea manager for causing the supporters to act the way they have.

Unfortunately over the years Anders Frisk, although at times a very good referee, has by his flamboyant attitude upset very many people both in the game and supporters. To say it is Chelsea supporters is vertually a smoke screen - remember when he was struck by a coin in Italy at halftime in a match involving Roma - he upset thousands that night and also received many e-mails and post that he did not like.

His sending off of the Chelsea player in Barcelona to me, was a very "home town decision" and he left himself wide open for criticism. Possibly the Chelsea coach went a bit far in his comments, but he never threatened the referee.

I have been in the position where I have received very very nasty telephone calls and letters containing threats against me and a few times against my family, especially when refereeing in Zimbabwe and the Transkei - each time the police were informed as well as the football authorities. These never stopped me from participating in the game I loved. Yes one treads carefully, but it was only my health that stopped me continuing.

We do not know the type of threats or what was said, but if you become a referee, especially at the level he is refereeing, then criticism will follow.

I really love my cat, she is adorable but I wasn't very happy when I got home from work today & my daughter told me that she had brought a mouse into the house. I know that's what cats do but I don't like mice. I don't know who was more scared, me or the mouse. Eventually my daughter & her friend managed to catch the thing & took it up the road into the nearby veld to let it loose. I just hope she doesn't bring any more surprises home.

Friends of hubby recently arrived in the UK. He is a UK citizen due to his mother born here, and she is here on a Working Holiday Visa, and she has a 2½ year old son.

Anycase, he is looking for a permanent job as a Paramedic and she is looking for a job in shipping.

Is she allowed to work in such a job on a WHV or is she still restricted to temp bar work etc?

I remember when I first came over Moons and Junes ago, we were restricted to bar work only if we were on a WHV.....

Some advice would be appreciated....

Friends of ours just arrived in the UK recently and they want to get connected......

They are looking for a basic laptop, which could possibly already be configured for wireless use, obviously with a router....

Since I am in no way an expert, especially when it comes to hardware, could you possibly give me/them advice on a few options.... There is no need for a big HD, as they are only looking for something very basic, to do the basics on... email, etc.

Follow up to "Meet the parents". We have just got back from seeing this movie. Quite enjoyed it. There were some comical parts in the movie. Imagine having a surname like that? :crylol:

My little boy came into the kitchen this evening while I was fixing supper. He handed me a piece of paper he'd been writing on. After wiping my hands on my apron, I read it, and this is what it said:

For mowing the grass, R5.
For making my own bed this week, R1.
For going to the store 50c.
For playing with baby brother while you went shopping, 50c.
For taking out the trash, R1.
For getting a good report card, R5.
And for raking the yard, R2.

Well, I looked at him standing there expectantly, and a thousand memories flashed through my mind. So, I picked up the paper, and turning it over, this is what I wrote:

For the nine months I carried you, growing inside me, No charge.
