  Child Trust Fund Accounts
Posted by: dudette - 14-02-2005, 10:55 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (1)

If your child was born after 1 September 2002, he or she qualifies for a £250 voucher towards a savings account for the future.

Read more here

For those who have already received their voucher, what have you decided to do? Go for the more risky but potentially more lucrative funds based on shares in the stock market, or played it safe, with a usual savings account?

I hear that Abbey national offers a very good savings account at a rate of 5.75%, and Coventry Building Society offers a savings account where you pay your Child benefit payments into it. They give you a rate of 7.25% guaranteed in the first year.

I have not done extensive research, but these are the best rates I have seen and wondered if anyone has any good advice for us clueless parents Smile

  A Powerful Song
Posted by: Pronkertjie - 13-02-2005, 10:02 AM - Forum: Christian Faith Praise - No Replies

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me for His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

  Teaching our children Afrikaans
Posted by: dudette - 12-02-2005, 09:55 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (6)

What do you feel about teaching your children to speak Afrikaans, as part of your cultural heritage?
My 10 year old daughter is asking us to teach her, and I don't know how to respond.
If we are definitely going back to SA, I would feel more determined to make the effort, but seeing as Afrikaans is only spoken in Southern Africa, is it worth it? Wouldn't it be better to learn one of the European languages which she would have more exposure to anyway?

  Sharks vs Harlequins
Posted by: Gregg - 11-02-2005, 08:18 AM - Forum: Rugby Newsfeed - Replies (1)

I thought last night was an excellent work out for the Sharks and they turned in a positive display. Yes there were a few areas of concern, most notably the lineouts and conceding too many penalties. However the defence was top drawer and some of the youngsters look like gems!!! :thumbs:

The loose trio of Jacques Botes, Braam Immelman and Jaco Gouws were awesome. I've always rated Gouws....he was the star at SWD and never got a chance at one of the Super 12 teams. I think he aims to payback the Sharks for their faith.

It was also great to see encouraging performances from Dean Hall, Gcobani Bobo, Trevor Halstead and Odwa Ndugane. Add to these guys Butch James, John Smit, AJ Venter, Johan Muller, Brent Russell etc and I think we're in for an exciting season.

Mention must also be made of Ruan Pienaar and Jacques Schutte, young players with a very bright future!!

I can see those Convicts quaking in their boots!! :haha:
