  Mandrake Move
Posted by: picanin - 04-08-2004, 09:12 PM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - Replies (6)

I just bought this months PC Plus at Tescos and on the cover was a Mandrake Move CD. This is basically a complete operating system on a bootable CD which gives you the ability to test Linux out without actually installing it onto your hard drive. We have a spare P4 1.8 here which I decided to try it on. It booted almost as fast as what Windows does from hard drive and gave me a fully working desktop in next to no time. Even better this fully working desktop included internet connectivity, full office suite, games and all the other doodaahs one has come to expect in a Linux distro but which Windows users are still expected to install themselves and at higher cost.

Anyone wanting to see how Linux works without actually committing to installing it on a hard drive would be silly not to try this out.

For those old enough to remember what Shortwave was all about you may remember Lorenco Marques Radio......listened to by many South Africans. It shifted to Johannesburg before becoming what is now Radio 5.
A site is under construction to make some of the memorabilia from that era available.
If you have any clips, material etc that could be used on the site or just want a trip down memory lane take a visit.
It is still early days and is being done in spare time but still worth a visit

  Cape Town Accommodation
Posted by: Gregg - 02-08-2004, 11:01 AM - Forum: Travel and Immigration - Replies (15)

I need some help from all you Capies please.

As a Natal boy I have very little need to venture to your neck of the woods often :p , however will be attending my mates wedding in Cape Town on 17 Dec.

We'll be staying over for 3 nights - 15 to 18 Dec and I need some advice on accommodation.

The wedding will be in Constantia....now I haven't a clue where that is. Is it decent or dodgy?? :o
North/South/East or West?

Trying to make up my mind whether to stay in Constantia itself (or close by) or stay closer to other places we plan to visit? I'll only really need to be close to Constantia on the night of the wedding.

Any suggestions/recommendations as to good B&B's or hotels? I'm aware that it's peak season so prices will be steep and places busy. Have been advised to stay away from the popular areas such as Seapoint, near the Waterfront etc.....is this a good move?

Thanks in advance.....

  Screen Resolution
Posted by: Bean of Love - 01-08-2004, 12:25 PM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - Replies (42)

It is doffie here again. I need help/guidance or a mental hospital!

If you can remember, I reformatted my friends pc a few weeks back. All was well, but then she tried to load her new BT package onto the pc. Everything worked well, but as soon as she put Norton 2004 on, all stuffed out. So I reformatted again, 'coz nothing was safed so it was just a quick easy clean and reinstall of Win98.

So far so good, but the screen, a plug and play Philips 107E... now has really large icons on, and when she opens a webpage the pixels are really big, so it looks like you zoomed into the page. So I brought the PC home, and at 3am this morning I was still formatting and reisntallin again, but the screen is still not right.

If I go into control panel, Display, Settings, I see that there are only the following choices.. 2 colours (Black & White) or 16 colours. Shouldn't there be more? And on the screen area the arrow is on Less (640 by 480 pixels) and I cannot move the &^*&*^% arrow to make it more.... so I now have really large icons on the desktop, and a very ugly display! (the display says PHILIPS 107E on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA).

Can anyone please help? :bigcry:

Beanie is distress!
