  Misplaced Scottish Paranoia
Posted by: mcamp999 - 22-11-2006, 08:45 AM - Forum: The Football Season - No Replies

Perhaps our paranoia is driven by the fact that over the last 5-6 years we have beaten Man Utd, Liverpool, Blackburn, Juventus, Porto, Anderlecht, Benfica, Ajax, Lyon, Celta Vigo, Rosenberg, Barcelona and drawn with Bayern and Milan. However, this does not save us from the constant English media bashings about the standard of our team and the Scottish game in general. Despite this impressive array of scalps, we are still led to believe that we could not live with the big boys of Wigan, Reading, Bolton and Charlton. The overhyped EPL is a fraud. Entertaining, yes. Best league in the world, the facts would certainly suggest otherwise. The fact that our resurgent National team would probably turn over England's consistently under achieving mob only makes it all the better. We are a small nation that, until the late 80s-90s, punched above our weight in the football world. Looks like we could be rediscovering how to play the game.

Kevin McCarra at Celtic Park
Wednesday November 22, 2006
The Guardian

Celtic have entered uncharted territory by reaching the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time. In the process, Scotland's champions ensured that Manchester United are heading for a state of perplexity accentuated by Louis Saha's miss from an 88th-minute penalty.

Buy Nothing Day

Every November, for 24 hours, we remember that no one was born to shop, we make a small choice to participate by not participating. If youÂ’ve never taken part in Buy Nothing Day, or if youÂ’ve taken part in the past but havenÂ’t really committed to doing it again, consider this: 2006 will go down as the year in which mainstream dialogue about global warming finally reached its critical mass. What better way to bring the Year of Global Warming to a close than to point people in the direction of real and effective alternatives to the unbridled consumption that has created this quagmire?

'The sausage contains no Dragon - honest'
Posted by: gwasi - 21-11-2006, 09:01 AM - Forum: A little more personal - No Replies

When Butcher John Langford launched his Welsh Dragon sausages the tasty combination of pork and chilli proved a hit with customers. But council bureaucrats were not so easily pleased - they have told him to make it clear on the packaging that the sausages do not actually contain any 'dragon'.
The extraodinary ruling by Powys County Council officials orders Mr Langford to explain to the public that his product - which has won Pub Sausage of the Year title - contains only pork meat.
Mr Langford said "it's crazy really but I guess its with all the EU regulations. We make Farmhouse Sausages too but no one would expect us to explain there are no farmhouses in them ... would they?"
A spokeman for the council remained unrepentant yesterday. " The product sampled by the councils trading standards service was not sufficiently precise to inform the purchaser of the true nature of the food. We have recommended to the establishment that they include the type of meat in the name of the food. This is to ensure that it complies with the Food Labeling regulations of 1996

  Moving on

So the family and I have finally taken the plunge and bought a house here in Switzerland, wow if I could convert what we paid for it into Rands ...dream on. Just kidding.

For us personally, I guess the act of buying a house in a foreign country was almost like cutting the umbilical cord. I know this may seem strange but after renting (or being pregnant) for about 6 years it just felt like a new life was about to start.

Although many locals congratulated us on our courage to undertake such a financial commitment, this was not upper most in our minds, more so the fact that we were finally breaking with the past and the notion that we would someday (sooner than later) return to SA.

Having now finally taken transfer and settled in, this last weekend felt so good having a view onto the alps, enough space for all of us to pursue our hobbies and generally enjoy each others company.

More importantly the kids have all settled into their new school without to much difficulty.

Once again a homeowner and this time it is for keeps!! (I hope)
