  Remember the bad old days......

I am sat here uploading stuff to my machine at home. I am currently getting 190K/sec. Who else remembers the days when even 1.5K/sec was an amazingly fast speed - on my USR 14400 which replaced my 2400 it certainly was!

  Which Disposable Nappies?
Posted by: Venus - 16-09-2004, 10:18 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (17)

In order to help Beanie & other moms-to-be, I thought it might be useful to post a poll as to which nappies are the best. I remember being totally daunted when I went to buy my first pack!

When my son was newborn, I found that Pampers Newborn were the best & now like to use Pampers Active Fit but find them a bit pricey. I've tried all the different supermarkets' own brands & found that ASDA's George are the nicest. I also keep a stock of Boots Basic Nappies for those times when my son has an upset tummy & I'm going through several changes an hour.

Are you able to offer any more advice? Smile

(PS: The poll only allows for a max of 6 options, so if I've not included a brand you use, please mark "Other". I have made it so you may tick more than one choice.)

  Next New Baby Question
Posted by: Bean of Love - 16-09-2004, 04:55 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (33)

Ok.. all you moms, come out and play...

AS you know there are sooooo many gadgets and things in the baby magazines... and what I would like to know, is:

1. Which items are an absolute have to have,

2. Which items are a good to have

3. Which items are a waste of money etc.

For example....

I heard that I shouldn't spend loads of money on a baby monitor, and rather spend the money on one of those ear themometer things.

Which things you couldn't live without????

Any advice would be most apprecaited!

  Wines - Help!!
Posted by: Bushbaby - 16-09-2004, 12:31 PM - Forum: Food Matters - Replies (1)

I am trying to buy the following wines and cannot source them here in Dublin (at least the 5 places I have approached so far don't sell them). If anyone can advise a supplier or online shop I would be very very very grateful.

The wines are:

Malvasia (sweet)
Marsala (both sweet and dry types UNSALTED!!)
Lambrusco (which I think is actually a liquour)
Vino Cotto
Prosecco

DEFEAT OF THE TONGUE ----
by Max Lucado

Insensitivity makes a wound that heals slowly. If someone hurts your
feelings intentionally you know how to react. You know the source of
the pain. But if someone accidentally bruises your soul, itÂ’s difficult
to know how to respond.

Someone at work criticizes the new boss who also happens to be your
dear friend. “Oh, I’m sorry—I forgot the two of you were so close.”

A joke is told at a party about overweight people. YouÂ’re overweight.
You hear the joke. You smile politely while your heart sinks.

What was intended to be a reprimand for a decision or action becomes a
personal attack. “You have a history of poor decisions, John.”

Someone chooses to wash your dirty laundry in public. “Sue, is it true
that you and Jim are separated?”

Insensitive comments. Thoughts that should have remained thoughts.
Feelings which had no business being expressed. Opinions carelessly
tossed like a grenade into a crowd. And if you were to tell the one who
threw these thoughtless darts about the pain they caused, his response
would be “Oh, but I had no intention…I didn’t realize you were so
sensitive!” or “I forgot you were here.”

Listed under the title of subterfuge is the poison of insensitivity.
ItÂ’s called subterfuge because itÂ’s so subtle. Just a slip of the
tongue. Just a blank of memory. No one is at fault. No harm done.

Perhaps. And, perhaps not. For as the innocent attackers go on their
way excusing themselves for things done without hurtful intention, a
wounded soul is left in the dust, utterly confused. “If no one intended
to hurt me, then why do I hurt so badly?”

GodÂ’s Word has strong medicine for those who carelessly wag their
tongues.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.
It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on
fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (James 3:6)

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.
(Proverbs 21:23)

He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will
come to ruin. (Proverbs 13:3)

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is
wise. (Proverbs 10:19)

The message is clear: He who dares to call himself GodÂ’s ambassador is
not afforded the luxury of idle words. Excuses such as “I didn’t know
you were here” or “I didn’t realize this was so touchy” are shallow
when they come from those who claim to be followers and imitators of
the Great Physician. We have an added responsibility to guard our
tongues.

These practical steps will purge careless words from your talk.

1. Never tell jokes that slander.

2. Never criticize in public unless you: have already expressed your
disappointment with the other person in private, have already taken
someone with you to discuss the grievance with the person, and are
absolutely convinced that public reprimand is necessary and will be
helpful.

3. Never say anything about anyone in their absence that you wouldnÂ’t
say in their presence. Insensitive slurs may be accidental, but they
are not excusable.

  Baby Care Suggestions
Posted by: Bean of Love - 15-09-2004, 05:28 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (12)

Hi...

I have looked into the baby care thing a bit since I found out I am pregnant. Hubby and I have not been able to establish ourselves well enough for me to take more than 6months maternity leave, so I have to go back to work.

Can anyone tell me... how expensive is childcare really and what are the pitfalls I should be looking out for?

Would it be wise to possibly get a young Saffer on a working holiday visa to become an Au Pair?? And if so, what would I have to pay, over and above board and lodging?

THis is possibly a premature question, but I need to start thinking about these little things before it is too late.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  Scanner - Help
Posted by: Bean of Love - 15-09-2004, 05:22 PM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - Replies (8)

Hi there...

I was given a scanner today by one of my work colleagues. It is an Epson Perfection 610 scanner.

I tried to install it, but something is not working... whenever I try to scan something, it says that the TWAIN or something like that is not working.

Would I be able to use the scanner at all... I think it is possibly because I am on WP and I don't think this thing is compatible with XP.

Any suggestions?
