  Vegetarian
Posted by: Surita - 14-01-2004, 11:32 AM - Forum: Food Matters - Replies (28)

I have a dinner party for six people on Sunday and one of them is a vegetarian.

What can I give this person except for the veggies and roasted potatoes that I'm planning to make for the rest of the meat eaters.

The difficult thing is that I don't want her to feel although I went all out just to cook something especially for her but how and what else?

I tried stuffed mushrooms once but I can't give that to her again.

And do I make enough of the vegetarian dish for everybody or just for one person?

Books, videos, and old times for kids!!!
Posted by: Icecub - 13-01-2004, 01:27 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (8)

You know thinking about this topic...i can go on and on and on....and wax lyrical about the fantastic books i had as a child which i lapped up...i loved reading and still do read a great deal.....

I know for a fact alot of my knowledge had come from reading alot....whether it be history, geographical settings....it worked for me during school and still does....

I want my child to read like i do, but being a boy he is lazy and not really interested unless it is the beano or the dandy..... i guess i cannot make him read....but he gets thinking when he asks me..."Mom, how do u know so much?" Then i reply "Because i read alot and i listened to my Mom"...just applying a little reverse pyshology....:haha:

What i am trying to get to is i am trying to get him interested in the old books i used to read, the secret seven, the famous five, which i bought a few for him but he has said they are boring.....

There are loads of lovely new books on the market...Ottakars and Waterstones etc are filled to the brim with lots of new authors and kids books.....

He has a penchant for the "Captain Underpants Series" which i think is good for him, it gets him laughing and u can see he is enjoying it rather than trying to understand and concentrate on Harry Potter for eg.....He also likes the "Horrid Henry and the nits" series.....i think it is just a boy thing for enjoying such funny stuff like toilet humour etc.....whereas girls would enjoy the princess style books etc.....Wink

Also trying to get him see old style movies like bedknobs and broomsticks, the sound of music, he actually watched Grease with me the other day and he thoroughly enjoyed it....as the present lifestyle is all about PS 2 and the pc.....but i will get him to see them and i know he will enjoy it.....

Last yr i took him to see Voulez Vous, a tribute band for Abba...he was disgusted that we even deigned to take him...but i tell you he thoroughly enjoyed it...because they had strobe lighting, lasers..etc.....and he even sang to some of the songs.....he even got us to hire the Rocky Horror Picture Show and he watched it three times and replayed our CD in the car for weeks...until i changed it.....Wink

Times are changing for our kids, but hopefully we can keep a few things on the old side and get them to enjoy what we enjoyed as youngsters......and am still enjoying.....Wink

  Ritalin
Posted by: SpankyJax - 13-01-2004, 01:21 PM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (12)

My nephew has been on ritalin for a few years now, i have always wondered if it really works?! He's still quite active, but i have always put it down to the fact the he is young and a boy. Getting upto mischief is the best part of growing up Big Grin

I skimmed through an article on Ritalin, i didnt get to read the whole article but the bit that i got to read mentioned that Ritalin is on the same grade as cocaine, and that the 'older' kids are faking the symptons to get the drug given to them.

My nephew is due to start at one of the best private schools in Gauteng, when they went for the interview, my sister had to tell them that he takes ritalin daily. They were not to keen on the idea, but it turns out that they will accept him as long as he doesnt not come off the ritalin. When we told him that he had been accepted, on the basis that he keeps on the ritalin, he turned around to my sister and told her its no problem as he knows he cant cope without it... my nephew is nine years old! how does he know that he cant cope with it????

Do you think it really works?

  Working Mums
Posted by: elrsa - 13-01-2004, 10:35 AM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (12)

Well today I'm sad, I just found out that 1 of my colleagues is leaving her job today. It's horrible, as she is the one person that I get on most with but I'm also sad because of the reason she has to leave.

You see she took on a job part-time as she has a 1 year old baby and was just starting out from maternity leave. Now she has realised that she can't afford to work part-time anymore and that she needs to go back to full-time work where she can earn enough to provide for her family. Her partner also works, but they just don't get enough in to make ends meet.

It's just so horrible that she has tried her utmost to do the best for her child yet now she has to put him in full time care as its the only way she can provide a better life for him.

I just wish that all that money we pump into NI could go more towards mother's who wish to care for their own children. Sad

  Honeymooners
Posted by: Cheffie - 13-01-2004, 01:35 AM - Forum: Travel and Immigration - Replies (13)

Hi all

One of our partners has decided to tie the knot and will be doing so at the beginning of June.

Two questions:
1. Can anyone recommend a good place for a few days break "locally" for the honeymooners to go to?

2. Their "official" honeymoon will only be able to take place in August sometime. Are there any special places that you might have been to that I can pass on to him and recommend eg: Maldives, Bali, etc?

Many thanks in advance
:chef:
